Notes from the Studio: New Year Resolutions

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM BV STUDIOS JAN 2019 My first notes from the studio of 2019 is going to be about my new years resolution (I know I can hear your eye rolling from here but I think it’s quite a fun one! So please don’t switch off) My new years resolution is to see more exhibitions. At least one a month to be precise and this will make it feel like a challenge and I love a challenge. I want to take in more art because it feeds my soul and something, I felt I neglected last y

    Notes from the studio: October.

Notes from the Studio: October. For me thoughts have turned to making in earnest ready for the markets and festive season to come. As all my work is hand engraved, each piece takes time and care and therefore planning. At this time of year, inspiration comes freely, every outing brings handfuls of leaves to draw and engrave so expect to see more of these creations in my insta feed and on Etsy. I have also started to make and sell my snowflake decorations again (see picture) t

    Summer in the City

Midsummer I love to think about the seasons. I have written before about seasonal shifts, they appeal to my poetic sensibilities. That’s why what I am going to write next is going to be hard… here goes….I don’t really like the summer. There I said it. It’s quite a sweeping statement I know. I like the idea of it, of long evenings, sitting outside with a cool drink and the warmth but the reality leaves me hot and itchy from sun cream. There is an abundance of beautiful flower

    All Change...

Winter is going… Can you feel it? The change in the air. It’s subtle at first, walking out of work and realising it’s still light; noticing the flash of yellow from some early daffodils. I love the change of seasons, it’s like the world is taking a deep breath in. There is excitement of what can come and nostalgia for what has been. I like the feeling of being on the cusp of something new. Being neither here nor there is so full of potential to be creative. This change-over i

    Icarus of sails and wings

Icarus flew too close to the sun. Icarus has long been an image held in my mind’s eye. The wings, the wax, the feathers, the burning sun. All the passion that taking flight to escape conjures up. I have never worked directly with the Icarus motif of the winged figure (man), although I have come close with installations of wax wings and tapered feathers (see pics) It continues to be a sauce of inspiration for me and I thought I would write about it, perhaps as a way of untangl

    Glass works

Today I have been further experimenting with glass engraving. I bought a basic Dremel hobby engraver a few years ago and made a couple of framed pieces which really intrigued me. I mounted the glass away from the white background in the hope to capture a shadow and heighten the elusive nature of a transparent image. It worked, a little too well maybe, as once again it’s a piece of work impossible to photograph! (see my attempts). Fast-forward a few years and my thoughts and d

    The Leaf

I find them everywhere. Even in the most concrete, urban places somehow a stray leaf will have blown my way, giving imperfect balance to my day. As foliage, green, they are a part of the tree; the garden; the woodland; the forest. Fallen, on the ground, they are mementos of what was. The autumn makes this passage of time, the falling becomes a spectacle. The abundance of leaves is an accepted beauty, a time to pause and appreciate nature. Rarely the singularity of a leaf is
