As June draws to a close...
Its the 30th June 2026 and I am sat in my studio at BV, its a slightly rainy summers evening but the light is beautiful and soft. It’s been a busy day, as always as a mum of three, yet here I can hear myself think. On the way over I was counting the things I still had to do, things that will roll over to tomorrow now anxiety building but when I get into my space all I can think of are the things that interest me, that excite me. I check in on the painting I worked on yesterda

Intension setting
Last winter solstice, I decided to set some new intensions for the season ahead. Between the winter solstice and new year there are 12 days. I wrote out 12 intensions I would like to focus on in the coming months. The first few came easily, things that I thought would be beneficial or fun. The last few were harder to pin down and these ended up being things that would be nice but not necessarily goal driven. I wrote these 12 wishes out on small bits of paper, folded them up a

The Fates
Moirai Clotho Lachesis Atropos The threads were being spun long before you were born. The shape of your life and all its colours, light and shade measured out by the fates. Lengths and lengths of silk that are your stories and memories ready for you to drape around your shoulders. One spins, one measures and one cuts. Spin, measure, cut. Moth-like in the darkness of decision. Measuring your life and mine. The cut can be sharp and clean or it can fray as it reaches edge becomi

Gathering
Together. I bring ideas and set them down next to one another The way the ancestors would gather berries and nuts Sustenance Together. I invite friends to a room, to a table The deep old knowledge that tribe is safer Survival Ideas cultivated, grown and gathered Set down on a table to be shared. I have fed from others tables and now I am strong enough to set my own. The gathering is important I have been thinking of the word gathering for a while now as part of my practice. D

Seasons- on the cusp summer
ThSeasons- on the cusp of summer. It’s mid May and we are having a cold blast- as if the last of winter is trying to find the window to escape and is bashing around. I am ready for the warmth. I do generally prefer the cooler months but what I am beginning to realise is that I like the seasons- I like the change from one to the other. In a few months time I will be so over the heat and the light I will be longing of the cool winds to return but right now it is the summer I am

Glass houses
I see the glass surface, reflecting the sky, trees and birds beyond the garden where this glass house is. The wood and metal frame creates a limit to this imagination, I have reached an edge. The reflections are sealed within a frame. The panes of glass repeat, rectangles as if each one a painting hanging on the academy wall. Focus changes and inside, pots and leaves and stems. Greens and browns with the occasional hit if colour of a fruit or flower acting as an anchor point

Wabi sabi Thoughts for Artists
The Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi formed quite a strong foundation for my practice when I read the book “wabi sabi for artists, writers, designers and philosophers” by Leonard Koren back in my final year of university, studying fine art at Bath Spa University. Bite sized ideas from that book can be found across my thinking. It was the first time I had experienced that moment of connection when reading something, the one when someone articulates something you’ve been thinkin

Shapeshifting
I keep coming across stories in English folklore of shapeshifting women. A witches ability to take on a form of an animal to serve a purpose. The idea of a witches familiar is a common one, the idea that a woman can form a bond with an animal that she feeds and nurtures rings true. The power coming from within the domestic setting. Shapeshifting takes on a new power and energy, to take on the form of something else not just have a close relationship. I wonder if it refers to

Thresholds
Thresholds The trees are coming into leaf like something almost being said. Philip Larkin. This Larkin quote speaks to me about the beauty of anticipation that you get at the beginnings of spring. It's the same feeling for any change of season, when you are on the cusp of the next wonderful thing and you are at the threshold of the change. A collection of thoughts on the in-between, liminal, threshold spaces. That moment when you catch your breath between inhale and exhale.
